Intent - How we have planned our English curriculum
At Parkinson Lane Community Primary School, we believe that a quality English curriculum should engender children’s love of reading, writing and discussion alongside developing their cultural capital through first-hand experiences. Developing good speaking, listening, reading and writing skills is essential for effective learning across the curriculum. We aim to inspire an appreciation of our rich and varied literary heritage and a habit of reading widely and often. The use of phonically regular readers and effective teaching of discrete reading skills enables children to read at age related expectations. We recognise the importance of nurturing a culture where children take pride in their writing, can write clearly and accurately and adapt their language and style for a range of contexts and purposes. We actively promote the use of ambitious vocabulary acquired through reading to inform spoken and written language. Through a plethora of learning experiences, we inspire children to be confident in the art of speaking and listening and to use discussion to develop their learning.
