Intent: (What we do and how we plan our curriculum)

At Parkinson Lane Community Primary School, we have designed a History Curriculum which enables children to achieve consistently highly, through progressively knowing more, remembering more and doing more as well as understanding more through EYFS-Y6. We do this by engaging engage pupils through a bespoke, personalised and challenging history curriculum, by stimulating pupils’ curiosity about the lives of people in the past, and preparing them for adult life in the 21st century. As well as providing the children with an overview of history prior to 1066, we also help children to build a coherent narrative of this nation as influenced by and influencing the wider world, up to the present day. We provide a black and Asian history thread where possible, which then informs our community events, in a way which is directly relevant to the children’s heritage. Through this they gain perspective and contextual knowledge which helps them make sense of the world and their place within it. Throughout their school journey, our curriculum endeavours to build a sense of identity and belonging on a personal, cultural, national and global level as learners come to appreciate the diversity of human experience and consequently understand more about themselves and as members of society.
