Parkinson Lane Community Primary School
Personal development
Here at Parkinson Lane Community Primary School, personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE) is an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development is at the heart of our school ethos. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social, and cultural issues that are a part of growing up. Our curriculum is inclusive and meets the needs of all our pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) by adapting teaching and learning to suit all children and all abilities. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. We believe PSHE is integral to the development of children’s values, for them to become positive citizens in a forever changing modern Britain.
British Values
The four main British values
Democracy:
Pupils, parents, and staff should have the right to have their voices heard. We have a pupil-elected school council where class representatives raise issues and suggest ideas for improvement.
The rule of law:
The importance of law and rules is taught and reinforced to teach students to distinguish between right and wrong. This helps children to take responsibility for their own actions. Students are taught the reasons behind rules and laws, how they govern and protect us, and the consequences of what happens when these laws are broken.
Individual Liberty:
We promote children's freedom of choice and their right to hold and express views and beliefs in a respectfully and considered way. Through the provision of a safe, supportive environment and empowered education, we have boundaries in place that allow children to make choices safely.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Different Faiths or Beliefs:
Children are taught that mutual respect and tolerance of those with different backgrounds, faiths, beliefs and for those without faith. Mutual respect is understanding that we all don't share the same beliefs and values. Respecting the values, ideas and beliefs of others whilst not imposing our own on others. Children are given regular opportunities to learn about a variety of cultures, religions and beliefs to reinforce the message of tolerance and respect. This gives the children the knowledge and understanding of respecting values different to their own.
Our School’s Values:
At Parkinson Lane CPS, we are committed to actively promoting the fundamental British Values which are also incorporated into our school’s ‘UNIVERSAL’ values. We believe that by upholding these values we underpin the ethos, environment, and curriculum at Parkinson Lane CPS and in doing so we ‘Learn to Succeed’. These values are shared during assemblies and across our whole-school curriculum.
